Job role

To set and lead the implementation of the strategic direction of the department as well as provide advisory services to the management UNACL on the appropriate strategies for the promotion of the Airline’s brand, business with the public, and communication so as to effectively support Airline strategy, in accordance with best practices, as well as established Company policies and procedures.

Key accountabilities/responsibilities

  • Establish and institutionalize mechanisms that enable the timely flow of information from all business areas and effect a coordinated official communication to the public.
  • Establish institutional controls that guarantee the quality of the information disseminated to the public and internal stakeholders on behalf of Uganda Airlines.
  • Develop initiative on crisis management to protect the image of the Airline.
  • Respond to requests for information from the public or designate another spokesperson or information source.
  • Address press conferences and respond to stakeholder requests, inquiries and complaints on behalf of the organization.
  • Plan and direct development and communication of information programs to maintain favorable public and stakeholder perceptions of the airline’s accomplishments and agenda.
  • Guide and advise top management and the board on public relations issues.
  • Develop and implement both strategic and operational plans for the Public Relations Section.
  • Prepare and implement public relations plans and programs which meet and promote the corporate image and brand of the Airline. 
  • Seek to impact and influence key stakeholders, such as Government, Authorities, clients and customers, the Airline industry, as well as the public in general, so that they are positively disposed towards the Company.
  • Build and manage a positive image of UNACL locally, regionally and internationally.
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of partnerships between the Airline, media and other key stakeholders so as to maintain continuous collaborations for the growth of the airline business.
  • Research, through reading widely, to access information that is relevant to the Airline and disseminate it to staff, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee and supervise the production of Corporate Publications and documentaries.
  • Manage and develop staff under his/her supervision, through, inter alia, professional training, coaching, delegation, appraisal, and feedback.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the relevant authority.

  • Strong leadership skills, team building, and networking abilities.
  • The job holder must have the ability to stay calm and maintain composure during hard pressing situations.
  • Must express a reasonable degree of maturity, and possess the demeanor that portrays the corporate image of the Airline.

Qualifications (knowledge, skills, experience)

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following; Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing or International Relations, from a recognized University. A Master’s Degree in any of the above is desirable.  
  • Hands-on experience of 7 years is preferred, four (04) of which should have been at middle management level.

Good understanding of the Airline’s business brand, work processes, events management, communications policy and related regulatory and industry standards.
